Boston… through the eyes of Frank Villafane

Yeah, down by the river
Down by the banks of the river Charles
Aw, that’s what’s happenin’ baby
That’s where you’ll find me
Along with lovers, buggers and thieves
Aw, but they’re cool people

Well I love that dirty water
Oh, Boston you’re my home
Oh, you’re the number one place

– Dirty Water by The Standells

One year ago, we introduced you to 2 Guys Photo Featured Photographer, Frank Villafane (see here).  I was initially drawn to his work because of some of his night photos I had seen posted on-line, but quickly learned of Frank’s passion for travel, urban, and railroad yard photography.  I’ve been impressed by his growing body of work (see here)… and growing success as a professional image-maker.

Frank describes 2014 as a breakout year for him with his images being featured in a variety of places (for example, here) and just a few weeks ago, Ed and I were contacted by an art director from Arizona looking for Frank’s contact information based on the 2 Guys Photo post.

The images featured here are from my own hometown, Boston, which Frank and his also talented partner-in-crime photographer, Rose, visited recently.  The top shot is from Paul Revere Park and of the Leonard P. Zakim Bunker Hill Bridge.  Stunning.

Frank, Rose and I had a chance to meet at Jacob Wirth, a 144 year old restaurant in Boston’s Theatre District.  Frank’s the good looking guy on the right!  The food, the beer and certainly the company were all outstanding.

  1. Prentis says:

Love your work, Frank. Looks like yummy beer. Here’s to you. Cheers!

  2. Hey Rey,

I was swamped with work this past couple of weeks…I never really got to thank you properly.

Once again, your blog proves to be more than just a “blog”…inspiring, uplifting, poignant – these are all descriptive modifiers that come to mind when I think of the 2 Guys Photo blog. Now it’s time to add one more – family.

Rey received us (Rose and me) like VIP’s. While I loved Boston, and Jacob Wirth’s was indeed “wirth-y”, living up to all the great reviews…it was the company that made all the difference. Rey made us feel like family…I will certainly never forget that.

Rey, I told you before…now let me reiterate: when (not if) you’re in my area (the greater NYC/NJ metropolis), dinner is on me. Time permitting, I’ll take you to the Jersey City waterfront, which just happens to be one of the BEST places to photograph NYC on the Hudson.

As you already know, I love the North East…there is no other place like it. Every city has its unique character and charm…and one of my goals is to visit and digitally capture each one. I reflect this attitude in my blog (An Urban Outlook) with the most recent post “Urban Industrial Imaging”, which just happens to define my photography goals and direction. Please visit, I welcome your thoughts and comments.

    And Rey…once again…Thank You.

    Frank V.

P.S. Thanks for the kind words Prentis…really appreciate it.

    • Rey says:

Thank you, Frank. It was a real pleasure seeing you and Rose when you were here. And for sure, I’ll be headed to NYC/NJ and look forward to that meal. Cuban, right?

2 Guys Photo readers – check out Frank’s website. Some amazing stuff there!

      Rey
