Daily Photo Phix: Before and After

I’m a big, big believer in the adage that it’s better to “get it right in camera” and also that “you can’t make a good photo out of a bad one“… but that never stops me from trying.

The above photo was taken on an unusually cool August day a few years ago at a beach in Acadia National Park.  It’s a throwaway shot and as someone who is more inclined toward landscape photography, my eye was drawn to the rock formations and scattered stones over the sand.  It wasn’t until years later that I took note of the toddler.  Hmmm… I wonder if some cropping, blurring, selective sharpening, contrast adjustments and the kitchen sink might salvage this one?

What do you think?  I’d appreciate your feedback.  Thanks!

Cropping is everything! Love the second one Rey. Not only does the crop give us the little girl as a focal point (nice use of the rule of thirds), but her bright green outfit really pops against the neutral background.

Ditto, Ed! Great work, Rey, turned out superb!

Well, I don’t know if I would call the first photo ‘bad’, but the second photo is definitely a ‘keeper’! It really is amazing what cropping can do for a photo, but you still have to crop it right. I believe you got it right Rey.
