Today’s Daily Photo Phix comes to us from 2 Guys Photo featured photographer, Prentis Drew (to learn more about Prentis, click here).  Here’s an additional image from Prentis (two versions provided – see his’ note below):

Per Prentis:

Hi Rey,

I just spent a few days on Shaw Island in the San Juan Islands of Washington State.  It is pretty far from any cities so I tried my hand at some night photography.  The “Stars 2” shot (second image above) was straight up with a 10.5mm fisheye on my D90 and a minute and a half exposure.  I was in a circle of trees which framed the shot.  Stars (bottom image) was boosted in brightness and saturation to show the passing satellite although it is less appealing as a photograph to my eye.

The other shot (top) was almost in complete darkness but with an 8 second exposure the residual sunlight gave a nice color to the sky and a glass quality to the water.

What a peaceful place Shaw Island is.

Regards,

Prentis Drew

Thank you, Prentis.  What a peaceful place… and I love the top image…

  1. The blue tones in serenity picture are beautiful and absolutely calming.

The top shot is excellent. The stars are cool too. Love the San Juan Islands. We used to take the boat to Jones Island to camp in the old days. Perfect place this time of year. I don’t play enough with long exposures, nicely done Prentis.

Thanks Maryann and Mark for your comments. Yes, this has got me to thinking what more I can do with the camera when the sun goes down. The tendency is to think that after it gets dark the shooting is over for the day. Break out that tripod and there is a whole new world out there.
